It can be the vitamin d deficiency on the prowl!!!!
Many people are now prone to this silent attacker which is hardly noticed. Tropical countries are no exception. People and societies in the tropics believe that they have an abundant sunlight throughout the year in contrast to the situation in the west!
What is vitamin D:
The sunshine vitamin, how it is called generally, is synthesized in our body when exposed to sunlight! Vitamin D (ergocalciferol-D2, cholecalciferol-D3, alfacalcidol) is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Having the right amount of vitamin D and calcium, and phosphorus is important for building and keeping strong bones. It helps in building and maintaining bone mass and density. Which when deficient the body’s natural defence starts pulling out the calcium from the bones to reach its daily needs!
Is Vitamin D present in the sunlight?:
No! It is not present in the sunlight but is synthesized in the body when exposed to sun! The ultraviolet B radiation of the sunlight initiates the synthesis of this vitamin!
What hinders the synthesis: Vitamin D is made by the body when skin exposed to sunlight. Sunscreen, protective clothing, limited exposure to sunlight, dark skin, and age may prevent getting enough vitamin D from the sun.
When we are getting exhausted very easily we tend to think that this is something related to the work load and stress. But no! You need to get the tests done right away for this vitamin before you rule it out as a mere stress related fatigue.
The fact that even most doctors are negligent about this alarms me. They keep looking for some major illnesses which they will rule out and finally end up in giving some multivitamin tabs which hardly serve the purpose.
Real Time Experience:
A cousin of mine who works as a teacher has been complaining of this fatigue for a long time now. She already is diagnosed with the AVN of the hip socket long back and is suggested to go for a replacement. She actually didn’t want to go the surgery so early and wanted to wait as long as she could. One of the docs, as a thumb rule, suggested her that she could wait as long as there is no interruption to complete her daily chores. She has been fine since then. She even started to work. None of the doctors even recommended her to check her vitamin d levels on a regular basis so as to make sure her bone density is not affected. She’s not even on calcium supplements. For a year now, she has been complaining of the aforesaid symptoms and she was thinking of the work related stress.
Recently, a common friend of ours, a dentist, suggested her to check for vitamin d and the result turned out to be very low vitamin d and immediate supplementation if not given will lead to osteoporosis. That was a shock for her and for the whole family. Of course, she is now on vitamin d and calcium supplements.
The very reason for this is insufficient exposure of sunlight and lack of awareness about the need of this vitamin. People who live in cities and urban agglomerations are exposed to sunlight and when they go out they make sure that they cover themselves completely up because of the pollution outside. This is what has happened with my cousin too!
Now What About You?
So wake up! Make sure you get enough sun exposure and maintain a healthy lifestyle balanced with exercise, diet and work. Any overdose is always dangerous! Keep in mind that once you are diagnosed that you have a vitamin D deficiency, you should take supplements and sunlight exposure is not at all going to help you out!
